Counsel and litigation clerks

From car crashes and nuisance claims to commercial property damage and major losses, we handle it. Aviva Trial Lawyers has built a collaborative team of top-notch litigation counsel, experienced at all levels of court and ready to go to trial if needed to get results. We work in Practice Groups, which allows us to shift resources as needed to support cases. We work for you.

Each of our Senior Practice Counsel is a skilled litigator who oversees a specialized team. The variety of files we handle includes medical malpractice, property liability, construction liability, healthcare and more.

We analyze each case to assess the right result and work hard to achieve it. Our confidence comes with the knowledge and years of experience built by our senior counsel, balanced by the fresh perspective of the more junior counsel we mentor.

Lawyers

More than 100 skilled lawyers in nine offices across the country make us one of the largest in-house legal departments in Canada.

Aviva Trial Lawyers Student Program

ATL’s student program can best be described as hands-on, instructive and supportive.  We look for both summer and articling students that are self-starters and have an interest in litigation. Our students will gain a broad exposure to insurance defence litigation, including motor vehicle accident claims, occupiers’ liability claims, accident benefits, product liability and property damage claims in a collegial and supportive work environment. Our teams are structured so that students are exposed to lawyers of all levels of ability and experience throughout the stages of litigation.

Summer Students

Summer students can expect to receive exposure to all members of ATL.  The summer student experience is an introduction to the practice of law.  Summer students can expect to draft pleadings with oversight from counsel, complete legal research, brief material and attend with counsel on matters out of the office.

Articling Students

Advocacy, specifically through the approach of learning by doing, is a central focus of the articling experience.  Our articling students will rotate through all practice groups, gaining exposure to the entire ATL team. Mentorship, both formal and informal, is integral to the articling program, as it supports the learning process.  Articling students will have the opportunity to independently attend on motions and attend with counsel on matters outside of the office, including examinations, mediations, and pre-trials. Our articling students are encouraged to get into the courtroom from the outset, which distinguishes the articling experience at ATL from other firms. Involvement in the litigation process from start to finish, combined with exposure to a variety of styles and approaches are fundamental to ATL’s commitment to training effective litigators.
