About Lawyer

Kate Mertes is Senior Counsel at the Oakville office having joined Aviva Trial Lawyers in October 2017. Prior to this, she worked as an Associate at Dutton Brock LLP. Her area of practice is first party accident benefits disputes.  Kate completed her undergraduate degree in International Development at the University of Guelph in 1998.  She went on to obtain her LL.B. from the University of Ottawa in 2008 and was called to the bar in 2010.   Kate has represented clients at the Licence Appeal Tribunal, Financial Services Commission of Ontario and the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.  She has extensive experience conducting arbitration and tribunal hearings.  She has written several articles regarding current issues in accident benefits and has spoken at annual client seminars.  Kate is also currently serving on the steering committee of the inaugural Canadian Defence Lawyers’ In-House Counsel Symposium. 

Personal Interests

Kate’s personal interests include, traveling, making jewelry, skiing and animal rescue.
