About Lawyer
Valerie Stiso is Senior Litigation Counsel at Aviva Trial Lawyers, where she handles insurance defence and subrogation matters. Prior to joining Aviva, Valerie was a partner in the Municipal Liability and Insurance Litigation group at a leading Canadian business and public law firm. Valerie has cultivated a diverse litigation practice focused on representing Ontario municipalities, insurers, and corporations in a wide range of complex disputes. Her experience includes matters involving personal injury, property damage, building code compliance, occupiers’ liability, product liability, fire and flood claims, and motor vehicle liability, as well as subrogation across these areas. She regularly appears before various levels of court and administrative tribunals in Ontario, including the Superior Court of Justice, Divisional Court, the License Appeal Tribunal and the Health Professions Appeal and Review Board.
Known for her practical, client-centered approach, Valerie tailors her litigation strategy to reflect the goals and risk tolerance of her clients, whether that means mounting a vigorous defence or negotiating a favourable settlement. Valerie brings a strong interest in legal operations, professional development, and mentorship to Aviva Trial Lawyers. At her former firm, she served as an articling principal, played an active role in student recruitment, and led training programs focused on both litigation skills and practice management. She has contributed to the design and implementation of professional development programming and has a keen interest in the evolving role of legal technology, including AI tools, as a means of enhancing efficiency and service delivery.
Valerie also serves on the Board of Directors of Lawyers Financial, a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the financial well-being of Canada’s legal community. In this capacity, she helps shape the organization’s strategic direction and ensures sound governance. Her contributions extend through her service on both the Finance Committee and the Audit & Risk Committee.
