About Lawyer

Fern is Senior Counsel at the Dartmouth, NS office, having joined Aviva Trial Lawyers in June 2018. Prior to this, she worked for a number of years in private practice with a primary focus on insurance defence. She acted as counsel for the predecessor to LIANS in defending professional negligence claims against lawyers. She also has experience representing plaintiffs advancing professional negligence claims against doctors and dentists.  In 2000, Fern joined a major insurance company as in-house counsel, handling defence files of all levels of complexity, including motor vehicle, property damage and coverage opinions.  She also has leadership experience, having implemented and managed the in-house litigation department with this company. Fern received a B.A. English major from St. Francis Xavier University in 1983. She went on to obtain her LL.B.  from Dalhousie Law School and was called to the bar in 1987.  Fern has appeared before all levels of court, including the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal.   She is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, the Canadian Bar Association and Canadian Defence Lawyers.  She has presented at CBA seminars on different topics, including Tort Reform in Nova Scotia.
